Gústafsson stays in Flensburg

He arrived as an interim solution, now Ólafur Gústafsson will stay for longer at SG Flensburg-Handewitt. The 24-year-old Icelandic international extended his contract at the VELUX EHF Champions League quarter-finalist until 2015.

Gústafsson had been signed as a replacement for his country-fellow Arnór Atlason, who arrived after Petar Đorđić had torn his cruciate ligament in the first match of the season. But when Atlason, who arrived from Danish club AG København, tore his Achilles, Flensburg again had to search for a left back. They found him again in Iceland.

Gústafsson fitted perfectly in the team, showing his skills especially in the first leg of the VELUX EHF Champions League Last 16, when he scored 11 times against Velenje. Now his stay close to the Danish border will be a long term.

“It is more than a chance to play for a club like SG Flensburg-Handewitt,” Gústafsson was quoted on the club website: “I can develop and improve and I am proud to learn at SG.”

Coach Ljubomir Vranjes was highly satisfied that the last open question was answered now: "Ólafur has shown a great will and improved constantly, additionally he is fitting perfectly in the team due to his character. I am looking forward to be part of his development and to carry on in this cooperation.”

“Now we have finished the future plans for our squad, and continue in rejuvenating our team. Ólafur is a nearly complete player despite his young age,” said Flensburg-Handewitt manager Dierk Schmäschke. Before, SG had signed the talents Jim Gottfridsson, Hampus Wanne (both Sweden) and Bogdan Radivojević (Serbia) for the next season.
