Bernhard Bauer steps down as German Handball Federation President

German Handball Federation (DHB) President Bernhard Bauer has stepped down from his office.

The DHB announced the 64-year-old’s resignation on Monday. "I have dedicated all my labour, my skills and a lot of energy to this position and the responsibility that comes with it, since I had been elected president," a Bauer statement, published by the DHB, reads.

"However, I had to realise that people’s personal interests again and again play an important role.

"I bid farewell by saying ‘thank you’. I wish (…) that German handball enjoys success in the future. Handball is a fantastic and wonderful sport that deserves to be positioned in brighter fashion in the public."

Bauer had been the DHB’s president since September 2013.

An extraordinary congress will be summoned to elect a new president. The exact for this congress is yet to be determined.

"We respect that Bernhard Bauer decided to step down, however we very much regret that he is not the DHB’s president anymore," said DHB General Secretary Mark Schober.

"Bernhard Bauer and the executive committee stand for change within and modernisation of the DHB."
