Hannover-Burgdorf secure quarter-final spot after beating RK Nexe

In the first match of Round 6, Hannover-Burgdorf qualified for the EHF Cup Quarter-final stage after emphatically defeating RK Nexe. The German club knew prior to the match that only a victory would be enough to secure a place in the quarter-finals. Although for the visitors even a draw would have been enough, they returned to Croatia after finishing the group phase in third place in Group B.

  • Hannover-Burgdorf are through to the quarter-finals
  • Cristian Ugalde Garcia and Timo Kastening combined to score 18 goals for Hannover
  • Despite Nexe beginning the group stage with three consecutive triumphs, they could not qualify for the quarter-finals

GROUP B
TSV Hannover-Burgdorf (GER) vs RK Nexe (CRO) 32:22 (14:9)

The home crowd understood what was at stake in the last round of the EHF Cup as a packed arena awaited the sides in Hannover for the Group B match.

Antonio Carlos Ortega Perez’s squad started off in control of the match with great efficiency in defence. Goalkeeper Martin Ziemer was in great form for the German side.

Hannover’s Timo Kastening was seemingly unstoppable as he scored three goals in just 18 minutes, and only 60 seconds later Cristian Ugalde Garcia increased their lead with an in-flight goal.

The number of total missed shots in the first half spoke for itself: Nexe had 14 while Hannover-Burgdorf had only 10. Hannover-Burgdorf held a commanding five-goal lead (14:9) at half time.

In spite of the scoreline, the Croatian side were more aggressive in offence after half time, but Hannover-Burgdorf could gear up and score in almost every fast break situation. The gap soon reached 10 goals and the players of Hrvoje Horvat could not stop the freefall.

While RK Nexe exited the competition, Hannover-Burgdorf can prepare for the club’s next challenge in the EHF Cup Quarter-Final.
