BIOGRAPHY
Gergő Iváncsik is part of a handball family. His father, Mihály Iváncsik, played on the right wing for a number of clubs in Hungary and elsewhere and won silver at the 1986 IHF Men’s World Championship. Iváncsik’s brothers Tamás and Ádám are also handball players.
Iváncsik was born in the handball-mad city of Györ, picking up the sport at school and going on to play both as a junior and a senior for local club ETO-SZESE Győr FKC. However, at the age of 19, Iváncsik was recruited by Veszprém and spent the rest of his career at the club.
Between 2000 and 2017 Iváncsik helped Veszprém to 16 victories in the Hungarian league and 14 Hungarian cup wins. He was also an EHF Champions League finalist three times, and a semi-finalist four times, as well as winning the Cup Winners’ Cup in 2008.
Iváncsik made his national team debut in 2000 and played a total of 270 games, scoring 696 goals, for the Hungarian side. He played at all major tournaments, finishing fourth at the Athens 2004 and London 2012 Olympic Games, and in 2010 was named Hungarian handballer of the year.
Since his retirement, Iváncsik has coached at Veszprém and currently leads their under-15 team. Both his sons also play handball with Veszprém’s younger age category academy teams.
