In 2024, the Spanish national team retired the number 9 jersey which had for many years been worn by right back Marta Mangué. It was the first time in the history of Las Guerras that a jersey had been retired - indicating the importance of Mangué to the squad. Over her 17 years playing for Spain, Mangué made 301 international appearances, scoring a record 1,034 goals.
Mangué was born in Gran Canaria and started and finished her handball career on the island. She played for several Spanish clubs before joining Team Esbjerg in 2007, which was also the start of a particularly successful period for the Spanish national team.
With Mangué key to the squad, Spain won medals at the London 2012 Olympic Games and world and European championships between 2011 and 2014. Mangué herself was named All-star right back of the 2009 IHF Women’s World Championship and the EHF EURO 2010, and All-star centre back at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
At a club level, Mangué’s time at Esbjerg was followed by a short stint in Serbia at ŽRK Zaječar before she joined Fleury Loiret in France, the start of a decade in the country. She won the French cup several times, with Fleury and also with Brest Bretagne Handball, and played the EHF Champions League with Brest.
In 2022 Mangué returned to Gran Canaria for a final season with Rocasa. She now runs her own handball club, a new initiative aimed at getting children into the sport.
