Mia Hermansson-Högdahl started out playing handball as a child, initially as a goalkeeper before switching to become a field player. She stayed with her childhood club, Warta in Gothenburg, until she was well established and had made her debut for the senior national team.
Hermansson-Högdahl left Sweden in 1987 to join Norwegian side Byåsen, spending five successful years there before jumping to Austrian powerhouse Hypo Niederösterreich in 1992.
At Hypo, Hermansson-Högdahl’s career flourished. She won the EHF Champions League in 1994 and 1995, and was named IHF World Player of the Year in 1994.
She finished her career, after another stint at Byåsen, with a single season in Valencia where she won the EHF Cup.
With Sweden, Hermansson-Högdahl played 225 games and is still the all-time top scorer for the national team, with 1,153 goals in her 14 years with the team.
After finishing her playing career Hermansson-Högdahl became a coach, firstly at Norwegian clubs Sjetne and Levanger before joining the Norwegian women’s national team in 2009 as one of the assistants to Thorir Hergeirsson. In 2020 she took over as head coach of the Norwegian women’s junior team.
