New system for EHF Younger Age Category events

Approved at the EHF Congress in Dublin in September 2014, the competition system for Younger Age Category events is to be overhauled with changes to be phased in over the next few years, starting in the summer of 2016.

The aim of the change is to make the competition more accessible, providing all teams with matches at the right level whilst ensuring a reasonable number of matches and reducing the costs of both organisation and participation.

Under the new playing format, qualification will no longer be played and teams will play in a two tier system.

The first category affected is the Men’s 18 to be played 11 to 21 August 2016.

The first 16 ranked teams will play at the EHF M18 EURO tournament in Croatia whilst all other lower-ranked team will participate in three EHF M18 Championship tournaments.

A system of promotion and relegation means that the winning team in each of the EHF M18 Championship tournaments will be promoted to the EHF EURO – both at the next M18 and M20 levels.

The gradual roll-out of the new system means that in 2016 there will still be qualification tournaments for the EHF M20 EURO.

The new playing system will be introduced for the Women’s 17 competition in 2017. Full implementation will take place from 2018 in the men’s and 2019 in the women’s competition.
