Penalty shoot-out to take place on Sunday in St. Petersburg

The last vacant place in the Men's EHF Cup Qualification Round 3 will be claimed on Sunday 12 November as the time and the venue for the decisive penalty throws in the Qualification Round 2 tie between St. Petersburg HC and FH Hafnarfjordur have been determined.

The shoot-out will take place at 12:00 hrs local time (10:00 hrs CET) in St. Petersburg in Kirovskaya hall and the winning team will qualify for the last qualifiaction round before the group phase. The reigning Slovakian champions Tatran Presov await the more successful team.

The Court of Handball decided on the shoot-out following a protest filed by St. Petersburg HC, which came after the second leg of the Qualification Round 2. After both teams played exactly the same result (32:27) in both legs, extra time took place instead of the penalty shoot-out contrary to the 2017/18 EHF Cup Regulations.

The panel found the EHF officials’ mistake obvious and therefore requiring necessary measures. Hafnarfjordur lodged an appeal against the first instance ruling, but the Court of Arbitration upheld the previous decision. Hence, the result of the extra time was cancelled and penalty throws set to decide about the winners. All costs and expenses arising out of the subsequent organisation shall be paid by the EHF.

Miro Korja and Christopher Metsämäki from Finland will referee the shoot-out and the EHF delegate will be nominated in due time. Only players and officials who were listed on the match report of the 2nd leg match in St. Petersburg on 15 October are eligible to take part in the 7m throws and no additional players or team officials are permitted.
