Kari Mette Johansen, one of Norway´s most successful handball players, has announced the end of her international career.

After 203 matches for her country the 33-year-old left wing from Larvik HK informed national coach Thorir Hergeirsson that she is no longer available for the national team.

"I feel that this is the right time to say goodbye. It feels fine to have ended this era with the Olympic final in London (2012) and the gold medal there," Kari Mette Johansen was quoted on her club's website.

"I have come to a point in my life, where I want to prepare for the time after my handball career, and therefore I want to have time for a job besides going on playing for Larvik," she added.

National coach Thorir Hergeirsson expressed understanding for Johansen´s decision.

"She has been an important part of our team for a number of years and has been of particular value at major tournaments. She has a lot of speed and great competence in all aspects of the game. We thank her for her efforts and wish her all the best," Helgeirsson told the Norwegian handball federation's official website.

In her 203 appearances for Norway, Kari Mette Johansen scored 496 goals. She has won two Olympic gold medals, one world championship and four EHF EURO titles with her country.

While ending her career in the national team, she will continue playing for Larvik HK.
