Danes launch beach camp at European championship
The Danish Handball Federation is offering up to 160 young people from the age of 13 to 16 years a unique experience in connection with the European Beach Handball Championship in Randers in July.
During the championships, the federation is arranging the DHF Beach Camp where the participants, apart from playing a lot of beach handball on the championship courts themselves, will get to feel the atmosphere of the championship and take part in a lot of related activities.
For instance, the youngsters from the beach camp will be active parts of the home crowd, when the Danish teams for men as well as women are playing.
“We are launching this beach camp, partly to offer a different kind of summer school, compared to the more traditional handball schools we offer in the DHF every summer.
“However, we obviously also do it in order to boost the event, the European championship.
“Another purpose is to try and hold on to the young people in the age categories U14 and U16, where we have some difficulty maintaining the interest from the youngsters at the moment,” Martin Schrøder, the DHF´s contact person for the beach camp, told eurohandball.com.
“Our success criteria, however, is to make it a fine experience for the boys and girls who attend the camp,” added Schrøder who emphasises that the beach camp is not necessarily related to the European Championship only.
“This is a pilot project, and if it becomes a success, it may be an annual event along with our other summer handball schools,” Martin Schrøder said.
The beach camp is divided into two separate camps, decided by age. On for youngsters born in 1997 and 98, running from July 8 to July 11, and one for girls and boys born in 1999 and 2000, from 11 to 14 July.
